“The only constant is change” – Heraclitus 

Change is a fundamental property of the universe.  Change in living beings is constantly unfolded through an active process of evolution, that is shaped by the organism’s deep interrelationship with its environment. Change can never be stopped, and attempts to stall it create disharmony within and between individuals and communities. As human beings, we have the gift of an ability to consciously, actively and strategically manage change. Our interactions with our environment including each other can have a marked effect on the flow of change. Reflection on change and these interactions allows us to positively channel the unstoppable flow of change. 

The process of critical, reflective interaction with our environment and ability to manage change has been described as “action learning” or “action research” – we conceptualise and plan our actions, basing our expectations of outcome on our existing understanding, while being keenly prepared to be proven wrong.  We carry out the action according to the plan in a spirit of alert experimentation, and observe what changes are catalysed by our actions as the plan unfolds.  We then reflect on how the whole process flowed and why it flowed as it did, feeding our reflection back to continually adjust our dynamic, ever-changing plan – a continuous cycle of learning, adaptation and evolution. 


This process is cyclical, as well as directional. To achieve deeper learning, we enter deeper cycles of critical reflection, experimenting with systemic sets of variables. We choose the direction of the process with our intention for learning-research.  Intention shapes our conceptualisation and reflection. There is no true duality between the observer and the process being observed, so truly objective observation-reflection is not possible. 

World-views-paradigms rapidly become obsolete if they are inflexible. Action learning allows for flexible, open thought. Accepting one’s subjective involvement and intentions in the learning-research process, and linking it to the active channeling of change, paradigms can be questioned: Questioning of sets assumptions, or even sets of sets of assumptions. 





“Nothing changes/everything changes”  

It feels like the apocalypse could be any time soon 

But some have felt that way in every time 

Did you see Leunig’s man with the placard that reads 

“The end of the world is nowhere in sight”? 

I don’t know if the “shithouse will go up in flames” 

But if that meant the end of mind control TV 

And poison, stunted rain, the pain of thoughtless technology 

A dose of disaster may be the bitter pill we need 



It seems as if nothing changes ‘round here 

Day melts into day, it’s the same year after year 

Nothing changes – change is what we fear 



Watch with disinterest while others pull our strings 

Stay at home with comfy clothes, and beer and bongs 

Waste the time away, day after day 

Stay awake long enough to complain about what’s wrong 

The Australian revolution  

Will be fought by flying pigs 

While we are sitting sipping beer 

And watching rugby league on the TV 


It seems as if nothing changes ‘round here 

Day melts into day, it’s the same year after year 

Nothing changes – change is what we fear 





This is the beginning of the end of the world we know 

This is the beginning of a new life 

This is the decline, the sunset to midnight 

This is a dark time, a new sun will rise 

New light, new sun will rise 

New moon turning the tide 


Change is coming for better or worse 

While we sit wondering, the world still turns 

For better or worse 

So are we blessed or cursed? 



The charges are loaded in the old way’s foundations 

Soon the explosion, how short the fuse 

Crisis is danger, but opportunity too 

Where there are changes, there are old ways to lose 

Old thoughts, old ways to lose 

A new life is ours to choose
